Skip bin sizes for Gauteng projects
Compare 2 m³, 3 m³, 6 m³, 8 m³ and 11 m³ skip bins. The suitable size depends on the material, volume, safe transport weight, placement area, vehicle access and project duration—not volume alone.

Use this comparison to narrow the options. CITY WASTE confirms the final bin size after reviewing the waste, site and collection address.
Skip-bin size comparison
| Size | Often considered for | Important planning point |
|---|---|---|
| 2 m³ | small home and garage clear-outs and bathroom or room renovation debris | Choose this size for a clearly defined small job. If the waste is bulky, spread across several rooms or likely to grow during the project, compare the 3 m³ or 6 m³ options. |
| 3 m³ | kitchen or bathroom strip-outs and garden and property maintenance | The 3 m³ option suits a modest project with more material than a 2 m³ bin can comfortably hold. For several rooms or longer projects, consider 6 m³. |
| 6 m³ | multi-room home clear-outs and renovation and construction projects | Choose 6 m³ when a small skip would require repeated exchanges. For high-volume bulky or long-duration work, compare the 8 m³ and 11 m³ options. |
| 8 m³ | large home or estate clear-outs and office, retail and warehouse clean-ups | The 8 m³ bin is suited to a large but controlled volume. Use the 11 m³ option for very bulky high-volume material when access and transport limits allow. |
| 11 m³ | major property and estate clear-outs and large commercial or facilities projects | Choose 11 m³ only when the waste volume, material type and site access justify it. CITY WASTE may recommend an 8 m³ or 6 m³ bin, or scheduled exchanges, for safer handling. |
Volume and weight are different.
A cubic-metre rating describes the internal volume of the bin. It does not mean every material can be filled to the rim. Concrete, bricks, soil, sand and wet waste are much denser than furniture, packaging or garden cuttings.
CITY WASTE confirms the accepted material, maximum loading level and transport arrangement before delivery. Never compact the load with machinery, build material above the rim or add undisclosed waste after approval.
What must stay out of an ordinary skip?
Controlled or hazardous material requires disclosure and a separate assessment. Do not conceal it inside bags, rubble or general waste.
How skip-bin hire is arranged

- 3. Agree the binConfirm size, accepted material, dates, limits and price before dispatch.
- 4. Fill and collectLoad only approved waste below the safe rim and keep collection access clear.
